I've intrigued myself. In one of my blogs I mentioned how much I loved colour and yet my dress choice and interior design colour palettes are more muted. So I decided to research this. I have my own opinion as to why this is but I wondered what could be found out there on the big, bad internet.
My own thoughts on this are quite simple, I actually like black for a start. It's cool and sophisticated, elegant and edgy. Black can be dressed up or dressed down, it's the easiest way to throw an outfit together in a rush. Whichever Sarah wants to come out and play then I'm pretty sure black will be a part of it.
The thing about black is that you can either choose to blend in with crowd by keeping it simple and down played or you can flaunt your individuality like a fashion beacon. I love a plain black outfit but then I'll add some vibrant killer heels. Sometimes the only splash of colour will be my shoes. I have a red pair with cherries on them that I love to wear with basic black leggings and a tee. Instantly my outfit stands out in the crowd. Or I'll wear plain black heels but add chunky, in your face, costume jewellery and a clutch bag that captures the attention of anyone who looks.
Of course there's always the plus side of the fact it can hide a multitude of sins. Regardless of your shape or size you will find yourself with an elegant silhouette whilst wearing black. As a mother it's pretty good at hiding the dirt too, unless you've had iridescent paints out. Then not so much! It always looks classy no matter how you've chosen to wear it and your outfits become timeless, you're not caught up in fashions latest 'the new black'. I do have plenty of other clothes in my wardrobe. To be honest during the sweltering heat of the summer here black is not a colour I'd wear during the day. It absorbs rays rather than reflecting it and I'd be a puddle as soon as I stepped outside, but I'll still wear it in the evening.
On occasion I go through stages of trying to wean myself off black and I'll buy bright and beautiful pastel tops and dresses, for them to spend most of their life hanging in my wardrobe. I love all these colours on the peahens that strut around but it's not for me. I feel too self conscious. I'm better with a top of colour though because I can at least wear it with black trousers. Again it has become a failsafe. My dad used to buy me red tops and shoes, anything to lift my black attire. He was of a generation where black was solely worn at funerals, then of course the belligerent teens took it over as their uniform of visible hatred upon society. But I look back at Audrey Hepburn who was absolutely iconic in both her looks and personality. She oozed sophistication and sex appeal in her all black ensembles. Never looking out of place regardless of the situation. If you look at the photos of fashion weeks around the globe you will see our celebrities of today donned in black from head to toe. It is unmistakably the go to colour for our fashionistas and they all look amazing. Not just because they are slender and lean but each and everyone of them has their own unique take on how to wear all black. It's fascinating this one colour can look so different on us all. It suits all skin tones and shapes, all heights and hair colours. To be honest I find it a very forgiving tone. It offsets my fairness and brings out the colour of my eyes, as it does with everyone.
As I said, I did some research and this is one of the things I found out:
"The Deepest Need of a Personality Colour: Black
Your deepest need is to have power and control in order to protect your emotional insecurities."
I think I'm quite outgoing and easy but this actually rings very true. I do, like most of us I'm sure, have emotional insecurities and I can see that black does give you and portray a sense of being in control. It's a strong colour and helps me feel confident in any given situation. Funnily enough when we held my dad's funeral I chose to wear a soft grey suit as I thought black was too harsh. I know that I use it to keep people at bay until I know them, it's a form of armour, that people will think I'm very together and in control of my life whereas I'm actually very scatty and open and emotional.
I also found that it's meant to give you an aura of mystery! To be honest I'll ignore that statement as I can't equate it with the need to wear black. I'm really not at all mysterious and nor do I wish to seem that way.
But tonight I think I'll wear a white gypsy blouse and break up my black ensemble. And that's a good thing. This weekend I obviously don't feel the need to hide.
