My dad always called me sunshine. I adored him.
He was this tall, sophisticated man with a suit and tie. In the summer he wore short sleeved shirts for work. It's funny what you notice as a small child! I remember listening for his car when he came home. And I would look up at this tall man and just love him to bits. Standing on his feet so I could walk 'with' him, giggling.
And it's through him that I got my passion for clothes. His father was a presser for Chester Barrie Suits. He loved good quality fabric and even now, as I walk through shops, I feel the fabric of the clothes and scrunch it up to see how easily it creases.
Fashion = Passion
My dad was the only person who I could trust to shop for me and get it right. He chose clothes for me that I wouldn't have thought of looking at myself. How to put an outfit together. To have confidence in my own style. At the time, I didn't really realise this. A lot of life is hind sight! My lovely hubby has tried, on occasion, and is getting better at choosing for me but I still wouldn't trust him to shop for me (sorry babe)!
We used to go to Kendal Milne, the department store in Manchester. Dad loved the sales and could always find a bargain. He would rummage through the bluecross boxes and find something, every time. He would shop for us all and particularly loved choosing clothes for my mum. Strong, bright colours that she looked beautiful in but never would choose herself.
And thanks to him I can also recognise a well cut suit, in the correct weight of fabric. I'm happy to help my hubby choose a suit, or even fabric to have a suit made. A well dressed man is a thing of beauty!
I really do love clothes. I don't always remember the names of people I meet, but I will remember what they are wearing.
You don't have to spend a fortune on clothes. Infact, I often wait for the sales before I buy something. Unless I truly want a particular item, I will wait. Most of the time, I get my bargain. Sometimes I don't. And I love High street clothing shops. They are up to date and with accessible prices. Because I love updating my wardrobe, I'm more than happy to buy from the high street. When I'm told to buy designer because I can wear that item for many years, I cry out loud at that. Firstly, I resent the ridiculous prices that you pay for a name, and second... Wear the same clothes for years??? I don't think so.
I love my conveyor belt wardrobe far too much. Clothes show the world who we are.
Never underestimate the power of your style. It is after all, your own work of art.
But clothes are nothing without shoes... The best is yet to come!
