What an amazing concept. I want one. I need one. Please...
My son's lovely mother-in-law has just posted an article about She Sheds on Facebook. It's really caught my attention because without realising it, this is exactly what I'm planning to have in the uk when we return home. I think it's really important for each and everyone to have our own space. Not a place to hideaway and not be a part of your family, but a place where you can have your own stuff out all the time, where you can read in peace, where you can just be.
I have this dream house with a dream garden; my dream house, which we call 'our forever home'. It's going to be our first home together in the uk and we are both really excited about. I have some great ideas planned for each room, Infact I have a board on Pinterest where we put our agreed interior design ideas.
Within this house I'm planning a cosy study with floor to ceiling book shelves, a wood burning stove, a cosy armchair so when Dicky B is doing papers I can sit with him and read. This is going to be his space, although he's also after a converted attic or some similar space (I might allow him that!!!).This got me to thinking about a studio for myself. As I've said before I really want somewhere to paint and redo old furniture. Somewhere that I can keep stuff out and not have to tidy up all the time. But within this space, that will have heating and electricity, I want my armchair, music, books, possibly even a green house corner. A place that is creative but not a shambles. A place where my friends could come into and relax with me. And in the summer double doors to open up and let the light flood in. This place will heal your soul, trust me, it will.
And if this all sounds too good to be true, trust me it will happen! We plan our forever home on a regular basis even to the point that I'm house hunting online and send Dicky B suitable houses that could work for us. But why have separate rooms? It's not that we don't want to be together, we do, but in my creative state of mind it's hard for me to put it all away and unpack it all as the ideas come to me. It stifles my creativity, and quite rightly Dicky B doesn't want to come home to a house that is in a state of flux. Thus a She Shed is very important to me and he completely understands my yearning for one. Infact he's more than happy for me to have a place to work in as he knows it's who I am, and it's something I have wanted all my adult life.
But of course being a typical woman, this She Shed will only be one part of who I am. It'll be my creative refuge. Within this dream house I'm going to take over one of the spare rooms and convert it into my walk in wardrobe, my getting ready space. I will leave all the wardrobes in the master bedroom for my lovely husband and use this other room solely for me. Of course it will still be a guest room but for the majority of time it will be mine, all mine. I'll be able to make it very feminine and shabby chic, which I love and he doesn't. All the girly stuff that gets in his way will be neatly tidied away in my dressing table and chest of drawers. My faeries shall live with me in this room. My wardrobe will be colour coordinated and shoes neatly labelled. Like a lot of women, I do have a girly side that I know is too feminine for men to feel comfortable in, so this dressing room/ guest bedroom will allow me to let my floaty, dreamy side be acknowledged. To have it's own place.
When you design your home it's a shared living space upon which you have both agreed on the look. The decor, the furnishings, the colour scheme, everything. It's your refuge away from the outside world where you are both safe and secure. It should be, in fact, has to be a mutual design. It would be terrible if one of you couldn't relax. How selfish would that be? So your home is place for your family to feel comfortable, for your loved ones to relax in.
And I haven't got around to describing my ideal kitchen to you... The kitchen is the heart of your home. Even when your children leave home, your kitchen will remain a major part of your home. We cook together, if Rick is on his laptop I'm normally preparing a meal. So this room is going to be family orientated with a cosy armchair or two, open plan dining leading off it. Hopefully a bespoke conservatory for us to overflow into when we are all together. A perfect family area. Most families come together at meal times and I want a kitchen area where I can cook for my family whilst they have room to chat to me, where I can teach my grandchildren to cook.
It really is going to be Our Forever Home and I can't wait for the next stage of my life. I'm coming home.
