It's so easy to make a sweeping statement. To make something sound that it's a complete and utter opinion that is immovable. We categorise opinions to make a quick comment, it's easier than having a full debate. Again it's partly due to the sound bite lives we live. It's instant and throw away. I have a problem with rowdy football fans, to be honest they scare me when they shout and scream at the TV and throw verbal abuse at the opposition supporters. So by reading that statement it sounds like I think they're all yobs, regardless of the team they support. Of course they're not and I don't. I just hate confrontation and anger. I wonder why they get so heated and seem to automatically dislike a person who follows the opposing team. It really is that strange to me. Surely we should say "it's just a game, may the best team win." Although that appears to be too simplistic.
I've avoided getting embroiled with all the election posts on Facebook. I have my own opinions regarding my home country and once again I avoided confrontation and anger, actually that's too strong a word, that would possibly be thrown at me from any side. I have my opinions regarding the US government too! What I don't understand is why people become so heated towards each other over something that all they can do is vote for who they'd like in to run the country. People become so black and white. They are right:You are wrong. You are right:They are wrong. I think that each party has some good policies and some terrible policies. Not one single party can do for any country what it needs. And if you can do better, get yourself out there and make a physical change don't just rant on social network sites! To be honest I'm too passive; I left a country that wasn't providing what was needed for my family. I made that decision.
I tend to avoid conversations that are about politics and football because I don't know enough to get caught up in a full debate and I don't like the upset it can cause; I value my friends too much.
Freedom of speech is often used as an excuse to bully others, to troll. It's ok to have your own opinion, we all do and the world would be incredibly dull if we were all clones of each other. Stepford Wives. But if you don't agree with someone that's ok, talk about your opinions, discuss them and agree to disagree. Don't try and force someone to change their mind and follow your lead. Having a passion about something is incredible and if you can put your point across politely and eloquently then you're more likely to get someone thinking about your side of things and maybe actually understanding your viewpoint.
I was completely trashed by trolls on messenger, by my daughters 'friend' and her minions. They detested the fact that I did the ice bucket challenge because of the ethics of the charity. I did it to raise awareness and I had many responses that I chose not to give, but if you're going to troll me please check your grammar and spelling! But this actually hurt me. I felt abused and bullied; it brought me to tears and I was shocked at the hatred these so called caring people had towards another person. They were all masters of one sided sweeping statements.
And yes, by writing my blog, which is just my opinion I open myself up to being berated by others. That I've accepted. Bullying I wouldn't accept but again I'm a pacifist and rubbish at standing up for myself.
So from sweeping statements that can cause major upset we move onto trolling. I love the phrase. It sums up these people perfectly. What type of person unleashes an unexpected vitriolic attack on a person they generally don't know. It's an advanced form of bullying which is completely despicable. They are masters of the sweeping statement but taken to the next level. Because we can be faceless individuals on a network, using a false photo to represent yourself or even a random picture, it makes these trolls feel safe, that they aren't accountable to anyone for their nastiness. Even worse than these invisible trolls though are the ones that knowingly abuse their friends, their classmates, their colleagues. They won't be actively cruel to your face but they're more than happy to stamp your emotions into the ground on a public forum. Shame on you all.
I read a lot of the comments on Ben's Instagram and the Asking Family pages. First of all the majority of these fans are incredible. Polite and just want to praise Ben, but on occasion there are some truly malicious comments. They used to hurt me, now I ignore them. I'm saddened though when the fans turn on each other. You all support and love the same band, why hate on each other. It's such a waste of time, it's unnecessary and it's cruel. That's when I'll sometimes post a response suggesting the world would be a nicer place if we just all got on regardless of our differences.
So perhaps we should all think first before stating an opinion as a sweeping statement because surely that's all the Trolls would say they are doing. I totally disagree with that though, they are far more malicious than just a sweeping statement but from small beginnings...
Think twice before you speak. If you can't say something nice, don't say it at all.
