I'm obviously getting to that 'certain age'. Although, in fairness, I think every stage of your life has you at that 'certain age'. There's the 'age' where you and your friends all get married over a period of 2-3 years. Then there's the 'age' where children appear. After that, life gets a bit bogged down with family life; which is amazing but all encompassing.
Suddenly, it seems that my own children are getting married (well, one of the two has!), as are nieces and nephews. When did I get to THAT 'certain age'?!!
Bearing in mind, all these weddings are on my husbands side of the family. He has two older sisters and 6 nieces and nephews. They're a great family, I love them... But a tad more conservative than me.
Which brings the inevitable question...what to wear to all these weddings?
The thing about dressing for a wedding, is, it's complicated! There's a lot of etiquette that needs to be taken into consideration. First and foremost, do NOT out dress the mothers of the bride and groom. A huge, mega no-no.
Closely followed by 'hat or not to hat, that is the question', question.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good hat, but I'm also partial to a neat fascinator or preferably, a sparkly bow. And of course you, again, can't 'out-hat' the mothers. My lovely hubby would love me to wear a hat for all these weddings. He says price is no object, a hat must be worn. I have the perfect argument though, which woman doesn't, let's be honest!! We live in Dubai and all these weddings are in the UK. I am not traipsing through airports, onto trains, into hire cars, with a huge hat box. Because no matter what size hat you buy, the box is always too big.
But, for my son's wedding. The hat was a must. My first born was getting married, and the American side of his now family, were expecting the English to wear hats. That's how we roll apparently!
So, from a basic black fascinator, I ended up with a handmade, one off creation that would do any mother-of-the-groom proud. To me, a win, win situation.
