Aghhhhh, I'm so frustrated. Asking are playing their first two shows with the new vocalist at the end of this month in the UK. I want to be there. The worst thing about living over seas that it's not always possible to be at every major event in your children's life. You can't be in two places at once. But I missed their first show as the original band and I'm so excited for the new vocalist. I've heard him; he's amazing. Sadly there will be haters that fit into the 'just because' category. The fans who won't like change, that are still yearning for Asking to remain as they were 9 years ago.
This year though, a few weeks later my beautiful daughter is part of an end of degree exhibition of their final project. This is being held at the Truman Gallery in Brick Lane and it's going to be the perfect end to a frustrating four years of university. So, it's her turn at the moment and much as I really want to be there for Ben and Asking, it's a huge step for them in the next stage of their career, I can't fly back at the end of this month and again in mid June for Bex, nor can I be away from home for that long. And it's important that I'm right there supporting her at the end of one stage of her life and the beginning of a new stage. I want to be there, I'm her mum! Sorry Ben, it's not your turn, but I know you're ok with that; thank you.
My Beautiful Bex has had a tough time at uni, mainly because of her course mates. They've ranged from being flaky, jealous and lazy to downright b*tches (please excuse my turn of phrase I really can't think of a more appropriate one). A truly odd bunch of people. It's been horrible to watch this happening and she's struggled on so many occasions. I've lost track of the times I've had to talk her into completing her degree. If she didn't have Ash I would have flown her home and found her work here, but that was never an option as Dubai would not be able to comprehend a hypoalert dog and the necessity of him being with her at all times. We don't even have guide dogs here let alone how few disabled people you see. It's shocking how backwards they are in this aspect.
Back to her exhibition though. The Old Truman Brewery is the home to creative businesses, exhibitions, galleries and markets. The exhibition that Bex is part of is Free Range, the UK's largest graduate photography show and allows magazines, photographers, editors and people within the industry a chance to the see the new talent that is ready and waiting. It's such an important part of their career. Even if Bex doesn't get a job from the exhibition it is a vital experience for her outside of the confines of college and it's limitations. And I'm excited for her. Between us we've bullied and cajoled family and friends to come along as part of her support group, including a few friends within the industry. You never know she might just be what they're looking for.
We need to encourage creativity in our children. Not every one is destined to be an academic, although she is intelligent enough. Why would we want a world of academics when there is so much beauty in music, art, workmanship of all categories? Our silversmiths, carpenters, potters, fashion designers? We are all equally important to keeping the world spinning.
This trip to London will also give my beautiful girl chance to allow her quirky, arty side to come out to play. The side that she tucked away so that she blended in more with the usual grunge of art students. To be honest I thought there would be more flair for fashion within an art college but they all seem to have adopted the 'I don't care' look. She might not agree with this but it's what I've seen as I've looked in on her life. The gradual feeling of being put down again and again by people she thought were friends. The lack of any guidance from her tutors. It's so much easier to fade into the background. I'm looking forward to seeing the tea dresses and doc martins, the skinny jeans and funky heels. Biker jacket at the ready. Come on Bex I know you're in there.
